Acrospire delivers bespoke stainless-steel columns for the Gull Wing Bridge

When a project becomes a landmark, one that transforms a town’s skyline, improves daily life, and even earns a royal opening, it deserves a closer look. Acrospire is proud to have played a part in one of the UK’s most ambitious infrastructure projects: the Gull Wing Bridge in Lowestoft.

Officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal, the Gull Wing has been making headlines for its scale, design, and significance. Spanning 345 metres and delivered by Farrans for Suffolk County Council, the bridge eases congestion, connects communities, and supports regional growth.

Precision-engineered stainless-steel columns

One of many multi-disciplinary partners involved in the delivery, Acrospire was tasked with a highly visible and technical part of the project: the bespoke columns supporting the bridge’s lighting and CCTV systems.

These weren’t standard components. Each element was custom designed to meet the demands of the site:

  • 10-metre bridge-mounted lighting columns
  • Specialist CCTV columns
  • Anemometer columns, to support wind-monitoring systems critical to bridge operations

Manufactured from Grade 316 stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance in coastal environments, polished to a 240-grit finish for a sleek, architectural aesthetic.

The structural demands were high, the timelines tight, and the finish needed to be flawless. Working closely with our delivery partners at Exterior Lighting Solutions, we ensured everything met the project’s high design and engineering standards.

“It’s the kind of project where every detail matters, and that’s exactly the sort of challenge we thrive on,” comments Tim Barker, Managing Director of Acrospire.

Engineering that’s built to last

The Gull Wing Bridge will serve Lowestoft for generations. Our contribution had to reflect that, delivering strength, resilience, and minimal maintenance needs in an exposed coastal location.

These columns may not be the first thing visitors notice. But they’re an essential part of what makes the bridge work – supporting safety, monitoring, and performance in all conditions.

Not every project gets a Royal opening

We’re proud to have contributed to a bridge that’s more than just a way across the water. It’s a symbol of investment, regeneration, and local pride and one that’s already picked up multiple industry awards for its innovation and impact, including the Bridges Design and Construction Award (above £10 million) at the Bridges Awards 2025.

So, while you might not spot our name on the plaque, you’ll see our work standing tall, every day, quietly supporting Lowestoft’s latest landmark.
