In an era, prioritising sustainability and climate protection, local authorities leverage LED streetlighting upgrades to align with regional ambitions. Luton Borough Council’s initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, save energy, minimise light pollution, and enhance public safety through clearer surveillance footage.
Luton Borough Council is responsible for over 18,500 streetlights on the public highway; It operates with a focus on maintaining a reliable highway infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient movement in Luton. The “Keep Luton Lit” Street Lighting policy is designed to foster a safe, green, and accessible environment, contributing to the overall prosperity of Luton.
In 2019/20, Luton BC initiated a program to replace HID lanterns with energy-efficient LED lighting on all traffic routes and residential roads. The council sought not only energy efficiency but also to return to photocell control switching at a reduced light level, following the failure of the previously operated CMS that failed.
Acrospire was appointed as main supplier out of two suppliers that were chosen for the project.
Tim Barker, Managing Director, Acrospire comments, “we provided luminaires for the mass LED rollout based on our previous successful collaboration with the council. The Sprint range of LED luminaires, met the high specifications, which resulted in the deployment of over four thousand Sprint Mini and Micro units across Luton’s traffic routes and residential roads.”
The chosen Sprint luminaires offer energy efficiency, lightweight recyclable aluminium bodies, a 7-pin Nema socket for controls, a fully programmable driver, and toolless entry for easy maintenance. Working to Luton BC’s lighting designs, a mix of over four thousand Sprint luminaires finished in light grey (RAL 7305), 45W and 90W 4000K, have been installed by VolkerHighways, across Luton’s traffic routes and residential roads, contributing to the council’s goal of creating a sustainable and secure urban environment.
The 4000K Sprint luminaires were selected to meet lighting requirements while enhancing surveillance capabilities for public safety. With a fully programmable driver allowing for dimming, Sprint offers further energy savings and user comfort.
The Council opted to install 35/18 lux photocells which have delivered a 5% saving based on the old CMS burning hours.
In four years, the adoption of energy-efficient LED lighting has yielded 43% energy savings and 61% carbon reduction for Luton Borough Council.
The LED streetlighting upgrades have not only aligned with our sustainability goals but have significantly contributed to creating a safer and more energy-efficient environment in Luton. Acrospire's commitment to delivering a high-quality solution has been pivotal in the success of this project. Our story
The idea for Acrospire was formed in 2012 when founder Tim envisioned a different kind of lighting manufacturer: one that would not only deliver outstanding customer experiences but also prioritise fair treatment for its employees.
We’ve come a long way
Motivated by the belief the industry wanted and needed better, Tim shared his plan to establish his own venture with Hatty, who simply couldn't let him do it alone.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Protecting local jobs and ensuring the best quality possible.
Working from a rented office by day and assembling lanterns in a garage at night, Tim and Hatty set to work.
11 Years later
Acrospire now inhabits a 14000² ft manufacturing facility in Basingstoke, Hampshire. We’re a proud partner of the Made in Britain scheme, ISO9001 certified and a member of all relevant lighting industry trade bodies.
Along with great relationships with our customers and a great team! We've attracted some of the most experienced members of the lighting industry, all by following one golden rule.
A simple ethos
That runs through all that we do. Customers who have made the switch to Acrospire have found working with us to be a breath of fresh air.
If you’re a professional in the lighting industry, you’re probably familiar with warranties that range from 3 to 10 years, with extensions available on special request or at additional cost. At Acrospire, where we’re proud to be different, we offer a market-leading simple 12-year warranty, as standard.
We focus on our customers not our competition. We manufacture our products in the UK: with the exception of our solar products, our supply chain is within a 60-mile radius of our factory in Basingstoke: to maintain greater control over quality. We al
