Felixstowe Seafront Gardens

Heritage lighting on the seafront. Nestled between the rivers Orwell and Deben, Felixstowe is a charming seaside town with a vibrant town centre. It is also home to the UK’s busiest container port.

Key Project Requirements

    • Long guarantee period
    • Choice of lower colour temperatures
    • Energy-efficient LED technology
    • Compatible with Suffolk County Council’s CMS system
    • Short lead times and fast delivery

Following a series of lighting upgrades and challenges with water ingress, Suffolk Highways launched a project to replace the existing SON Victorian-style heritage lanterns throughout Hamilton Gardens.

Positioned directly adjacent to the coastline the location is a fine representation of Edwardian and Victorian architecture. It also boasts views of colourful beach huts and four miles of picturesque sand and shingle beaches.

One of the key requirements of the project was to bring consistency to the colour temperatures, which were a mix-match due to previous replacements at different times.

With such close proximity to the sea, the chosen lanterns needed to withstand the demanding operating conditions and stand up to saltwater weathering.

Carl Lockwood, Street Lighting Engineer, Suffolk Highways, describes, “The scheme was to replace Victorian heritage lanterns at Hamilton Gardens, Felixstowe. As this installation is directly on the East Coast, it was imperative that the lanterns were of a high-quality build supported with a long warranty period.”

Our Solution

The Suffolk Highways team selected our 27W Muirfield lanterns to grace the coastline. Its traditional aesthetics blend perfectly with the surrounding architecture. The choice of 2700K LED colour temperature with our high performance Acrospire LED optic brings colour consistency in a style befitting of the location and delivered significant energy savings.

A RAL9005 black finished ed cast frog bracket prevents excess water ingress, rectifying previous issues.

Muirfield has been 1000-hour salt-spray tested, ensuring it is robust enough to guarantee performance in this seafront location. Furthermore, a DALI-enabled driver ensures compatibility with Suffolk County Council’s CMS system.

"The British built Muirfield Heritage lantern was ideal for this scheme as it has a standard 12 year manufacturer’s warranty and as the lantern chosen was LED, a significant energy and carbon saving was made over all the lanterns installed.
Acrospire were very efficient and a pleasure to deal with as we were kept informed throughout the build of the lanterns which were delivered on the expected date with no delays."
