VolkerHighways use Acrospire for Luton parks

In the heart of Luton, change is in the air – and it’s all about cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.

We are pleased to announce that VolkerHighways has successfully installed our Defender solar street lighting at two prominent public locations in Luton, a pivotal stride towards enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints in the borough.

As part of VolkerHighways’ street lighting maintenance contract with Luton Council, they have installed 25 Defender solar streetlights at Kingsway Recreation Ground and 35 in the space adjacent to Wandon Park- and they’re set to make a big impact on the environment.

Zero carbon, zero fuss

Solar street lighting is the embodiment of “green meets efficient.” Designed specifically for the UK market, these advanced medium-duty lights harness the sun’s power to produce zero carbon emissions and eliminate the need for wasteful electricity consumption. Plus, say goodbye to costly cabling, trenching, and grid connections –Defender solar streetlights are not only cheaper to run but require little in the way of traditional infrastructure.

Lighting the way, the smart way

The passive lanterns automatically come on at night and remain at 20% brightness until someone is within 15 metres on either side of the streetlight, where it then switches to full power. Each streetlight is evenly spaced 30 metres apart, and the units require no maintenance other than cleaning every few years

Control in the palm of your hand

The Defender lantern can be provided with the SAM (Solar Asset Monitoring) system that can be controlled via a handy app. This feature allows the maintenance team to remotely monitor the lantern’s performance, identify potential faults, and adjust the brightness settings.

Community-focused and environmentally driven

This installation isn’t just about saving energy and reducing carbon emissions; it’s also focused on creating safer and more inviting public spaces. David Easton, Operations Director for VolkerHighways, said“Solar Street lighting provides continuous light while saving optimal energy and light pollution. It’s great to see Luton Council making use of these eco-friendly innovations. The parks are now well-lit, making the areas safer for park users and residents.”

Cllr Javed Hussain, the portfolio holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said, “Every action we take as a council matter when it comes to reducing our town’s carbon emissions. Installing zero carbon street lighting in these areas will not only save emissions and money but also help keep our residents safe at night.”

Time to Take Action!
